The Scene:

The Pope chillin in the Popemobile. . . sporting a wide-brimmed RED hat. . . that looks like a mix between a sombrero and a safari hat.

He was wearing it because it was so hot outside that he wanted some protection from the sun. It's the first time he's worn a hat like that in public; Pope John Paul the Second apparently wore the style a few times. (Reuters U.K.)
